brawl -- taken to the hospital after a street brawl. allie rasmus has more. good morning, ail lye. >> reporter: good morning. this is a busy intersection here behind us. but a few hours ago this morning, is was completely blocked 0 to traffic -- blocked off to traffic to investigate this brawl that they say involved 20 to 30 people. the witness said it was 2:00 this morning when he looked out the window and sap the people involved in the fight -- and sap the people involved in the fight. he -- saw the people involved in the fight. now, the victim was rushed to the hospital with life- threatening injuries. as the website explained to us in spanish, the people were shouting kill the guy!

kill the guy! the victim is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. another witness was hurt. officers don't believe the brawl was gang-related but this witness said he believes it -- was a racially-related fight. officers at the scene told us no weapons were used. this was a fistfight involving least 20 people. police have not made any arrests in connection with this assault. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. just about 7:03. a large early-morning fire in san carlos damaged one business and another business had to be evacuated. it all started about 12:30 at a restaurant supply company on washington street. you can see christien kafton is there. rathers are still trying to fig -- investigators are still trying to figure out how this started. >> reporter: the fire is out.

but the firefighters still are on the scene monitoring for hot spots. this was a major fire early this morning. an alarm went out about 12:30 a.m. crews arrived. minutes later, they found heavy spoke coming out of the building. they got to work right away trying to put the fire out. about an hour and a half later, they were still putting out the fire. firefighters finally got that fire under control at about 2:15. the battalion chief i spoke to explained that the supply store is packed with items. that's one of the reasons why this fire was so hard to put out. >> due to the high fire storage and the contents, the extinguishment took a long time and was also very difficult. >> reporter: this 24-hour witness was damaged. we looked in the window, we could see some water damage and a fan on trying to blow the

smoke out. coming back to the live shot, you can see the silver suv, another customer showing up at the 24-hour fitness learning they will be closed for the day. a lot of people inconvenienced here trying to fund out if they -- to find out if they can work out or not. we'll continue to stay on this story and bring you the latest details. for now we're live, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. an unintended candle may have started a fire on shafter avenue and jennings street. everyone got out of the house safely. the fire caused minor damage. 7:05. a public memorial for chris stevens is scheduled at san francisco's city hall this afternoon. 52-year-old stevens was one of four americans killed during the september 11th attack on u.s. consulate.

he grew up in the bay area, and graduated from piedmont high school. the memorial is scheduled at 4:30 in the city hall row ton doe. secretary of state, hilly clinton is taking responsibility for security at the u.s. consulate in benghazi. the obama administration has been criticized for denying requests for this prior to the attack. >> i take responsibility, i'm in charge of the state department, 60,000. the vice president and vice president certainly wouldn't be knowledgeable about specific decisions that are made by security officials. >> secretary clinton says she has appointed an independent panel to investigate the attack on the consulate. the "new york times" reports that the pentagon and the state department want to help the libyan government create a commando force to

northbound 101 in sunnyvale right at the lawrence expressway. it was blocking lanes for more than an hour. 101 is just a huge mess. if you are trying to get into sunnyvale, i would suggest trying to use 280 which is slow but not as bad. there's 280. it's kind of moving along. 2 does -- it does get better. if you don't have to use 101 through san jose, don't do it. it's a terrible mess because of an earlier crash. bay bridge toll plaza, we have a backup now. this is a normal delay. today is more like a 20 to 25- minute delay. san francisco. northbound 101, southbound 101. southbound 101 at cesar chavez being reported, a new noninjury crash but look at all of that slow traffic. this is not the way it normally looks. i would avoid 101 for now and go down to 280 extension. you can get it on 6th street there and use that instead

stake tonight. >> what about the moderator, candy crowley? there's been some -- she said she doesn't want to be a prop. >> reporter: this is sort of interesting, the two campaigns signed a deal that said the moderator would facilitate the audience. candy says if need be she should step in or rephrase the question or try to get a petter -- better answer. i've known candy for years. she's actually one of my neighbors. i think the world of her. i think she will go to a -- she will do a good job. i don't care if she does, there's people that will be not very pleased with what she does. to me if i were in her shoes, i would be doing exactly that. there might be some questions

7:30. the coast guard is searching for a missing pilot who may have crashed sortly after taking off in half mooney an experimental -- half moon bay in an experimental plane. alex savidge is live to let us know where the coast guard is focusing its search. >> reporter: good morning, tori. this small single engine airplane fell off the radar shortly after takeoff yesterday. the thought is, it may have gone down in the ocean, the half moon bay airport is right there on the coast. the coast guard has become involved in the search. they are trying to find the plane and the 75-year-old pilot on board at the controls. this morning we talked with a petty officer at the coast guard island station here in leamed for an update on the -- in last-minute for an update on the -- in leamed for an update

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. it's tuesday, it's october 16th. overnight one person was seriously hurt in san francisco's mission district during a wild street brawl just hours ago. allie rasmus live at 16th and va len seepia now. you have talked to a witness. what did they say, aley? >> reporter: was a brawl involving anywhere from 20 to 0 people. this is 16th and valencia -- 20 to 30 people. this is 16th and va seia -- valencia. one person was seriously hurt in the fight. he went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. according to the witness, the victim was the so fuss -- was the focus of the fight. it appeared he was being

attacked by several people at once. when the fight appeared to be over, a taxi pulled up and several people who had been fighting jumped in and took off. >> that man explained to us in spanish that the taxi didn't stop. it said it looked like the guy -- officers at the scene say they don't believe it was a gang-related fight but the witness we talked to said because of the type of profanity, he believes this was a racially motivated fight between english-speaking latinos and spanish-speaking immigrants. officers told us no weapons were used. this was a fistfight involving anywhere from 20 to 30 people and police have not made any arrests in decks with this assault. an early-morning fire is under investigation in san car lease t was first reported just

after 12:0 at a restaurant supply store on washington street. christien kafton is more on the damage and why this was a hard fire to fight. >> they are still trying to figure out exactly how much damage was done here. the deputy chief from san carlos fire, just arrived here on the scene. if you can tell us why you are here. why it's so important to monitor the situation here. >> right now, based upon the amount of loading in the building with materials for the business, it would take us quite a while to overhaul. the investigation has slowed down to look at the cause. >> when you say loading, you are talking about the amount of items that were inside of this warehouse. that makes it tough to fight but it also provides areas where embers can hide and re- ignite the fire. with that much material inside a building which isn't

uncommon, we have to take it apart piece by piece and get the -- and get the cause accurate. >> any idea what caused this fire? is it suspicious. >> it's not suspicious but it is -- but it is still under investigation. >> reporter: okay. fire crews are now on the scene. now that the sun is up, we are gating a better look at this. firefighters -- firefighters say a lot of this happened at the back of the warehouse. this moving, it was a imagine off fire here. crews arrived minute here to find heavy smoke coming out of the building. an hour and a half later, they were still fighting that fire. firefighters finally got it under control at about 2:15 a.m. as you heard the battalion chief explain early. it's a supply store. so it's backed -- it's packed with items. that's one of the reasons why they are still on scene.

the fire forced the evacuation of a 24-hour fitness next sore. we saw water damage and a fan blowing there. we spoke with the staff at that 24-hour fitness and they say they will be foesed -- they will be closed at least today. we see a steady stream of people comening and going, trying to figure out if the gym is open. the word is filtering out that, in fact, the 24-hour fitness here right next to the san carlos restaurant supply will be closed for the day. christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. an unintended candle may have started a fire on shafter avenue and jennings street at a house. everyone got out of the home safely. 8:03. well, president obama and mitt romney face off tonight in the second of their three debates. in fact, we're keeping -- this is the live -- this is the live picture. this is where the debate will

to allow a chick-fil-a restaurant to open. the one appeal claims noise and air pollution will negatively affect the people who live near the proposed site. there is another appeal that says the drive-thru will lead to more collisions between cars and bicyclists. chick-fil-a has created a lot of controversy after the ceo spoke out against gay marriage. a three-judge panel struck down a similar phone book orie conditions that seattle, ruling that phone books are protected speech under the first amendment. a pilot program to keep unwanted phone books from being delivered in san francisco was scheduled to begin in may. a trade group sued to overcome that law. i want to check in with sal. it's bun a busy tuesday. what are things like on highway 4. highway 4 is gonna be slow. contra costa county, even

though we haven't had any major things going on there. it's still been slow. it's been slow in anty okay, bay point, and concord on 680 and then moderately heavy between 24 and walnut creek and oakland. and taking a look at the commute here at the bay bridge toll plaza, that's a pretty big delay here at the toll plaza. no major problems. we talked about highway 4 and 680, i want to move the maps down to the south bay where the 101 has been ridiculous. in fact, it's slow from capital expressway all the way up to sunnyvale. 85 and 280 are taking a beating but i would still not be on 101. steve? >> sal? >> it's not as foggy as it was yesterday, is it? >> not as. yesterday we were doing the fog dance. david stayed it was clear in golden gate park and then here comes the fock.

8:30. happening right now, the coast guard's out there searching for a missing pilot who may have crashed shortly after taking off at half moon bay. alex savidge has been on the story since 4:30. you are at the coast guard station in alameda. what's the latest. what do you know right now, alex? >> reporter: well, dave, at this point, they haven't found nep signs of the meckage -- wreckage here. a 75-year-old pilot is at the controls of this single-enjing, per mental aircraft -- sinning- engine experimental aircraft. we got an update from the coast guard. they have two vessels searching for signs of wreckage.

this is the type of plane that's missing. an aero-pro. this is not the plane involved here. so the pilot, andrew haden, was the openly person on board. his wife got worried when he didn't make it home. she got worried and called authorities. >> according to the radar information that he's in the half moon bay area and then -- that's the information we have to go on and that's why we're searching that area right now pretty thoroughly. >> reporter: the coast guard tells me their survivability models do suggest he could be still be alive -- he could still be alive even if his plane went down in the ocean. they plan to launch a plane

that can cover a much bigger area. they plan to do that along -- as soon as the fog clears along the coast. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:32. a marin county teenager will stand trial on charges of attempted murder and other charges. the judge ruled yesterday there is enough evidence for 18-year- old max wade to stand trial. his alleged crime spree started last year when police say he stole celebrity chef guy fieri's lamborghini. then in april, police say wade fired shots at two teenagers causing minor injuries. the trial date has not been set as of yet. two san francisco supervisors are introducing legislation that would cre state a -- that would create a domestic violence policy for city and county employees. the announcement comes days

federal money may help save a plan to provide help for low- income youth in san francisco. later this month, the metropolitan commission will take a vote on whether to allocate $15 million to programs that introduce new riders to public transit. the agency could get $7 million of the money and with the funds available for the youth program. it could be up and running by next year. well the $15 million contract between marin county and the golden gate bridge district is in jeopardy. the contract was restrewed yesterday and officials are concerned that the document stakes away some of their flexibility the bridge -- takes away some of the bridge distric serve. 8:37. busy tuesday morning. let's check in with sal. right now, we do have a lot

for about two, three days. the next couple of days look very warm. some thick fog around the coast -- around the coast and bay. 50s and 60s. the lows -- the lows are the warmest i've seen in a long time. a little bit more of a westerly breeze. it looks like that will happen tomorrow once the system in the pacific northwest goes by. everything continues to come in as advertised. a warm week coming up. more so, i think on wednesday and then definitely thursday but then after that, it starts to go down again. the temperatures, let's get the fog back. today some of that thick fog will give way to sunshine for
